Helping at-risk senior citizens in Ancud

The Chilean population is aging at a rapid pace. Many poor senior citizens find themselves alone and living in precarious situations. PADAM is a program designed to improve the quality of life for this population in the town of Ancud. Our volunteers are there to support one of the most excluded sectors of the Chilean population. Our regional partner is: Hogar de Cristo

A significant number of senior citizens are living alone and in poverty. Programs addressing this problem need to be expanded to include better health care for those over the age of 60 as well as measures to decrease their physical, social and emotional deterioration. Appropriate technical tools and knowledge must also be provided so that these efforts are effective.

We set up in Ancud in southern Chile to work in conjunction with the NGO Hogar de Cristo on the Senior Citizen Home Care Program (PADAM-Programa de Atención Domiciliaria al Adulto Mayor). We determined three areas for intervention: technical training for those in charge of the program, incorporation of new tools into the visiting plan to aid psycho-social interventions and evaluation of senior citizens, and support in designing and implementing new volunteer recruitment procedures. We help improve the quality of life for senior citizens in Ancud by strengthening this pioneering program.

Our presence has benefitted over 20 senior citizens living in poverty due to the lack of family support and financial resources. We also helped the individual in charge of technical procedures and resource management for the PADAM initiative.
